KN5018P Hydroxyl Acrylic Resin for Plastic Coatings

KN5018P is a hydroxyl acrylic resin for plastic coatings from KENXON. It offers good adhesion to ABS and PC, fast drying and good recoatability. In addition, it works with a wide range of resins and solvents.

Coating makers can use KN5018P to develop solid-color and aluminum-pigmented paints for PC plastics. The product data sheet also provides a metallic paint formula and test results on ABS. Together, these details offer a starting point for product trials.

Good Adhesion to ABS and PC

KN5018P offers good adhesion to ABS and polycarbonate, also known as PC. As a result, coating makers can consider it when developing paints for these plastics.

The resin also offers good recoatability. This feature matters when a coating process includes another coat.

However, plastic grades and surface conditions can vary. Therefore, test the full paint system on the actual part before production.

Fast Drying and Good Recoatability

KN5018P combines fast drying with good recoatability. These features support the development of plastic coating systems.

For example, the supplier’s reference coating reached surface dryness in 15 minutes under the stated cotton-ball test. This result describes the tested paint formula.

However, other formulas may dry at different rates. Therefore, check drying time and recoating behavior under your own process conditions.

Broad Compatibility for Formulation Work

KN5018P works with several materials listed in the product data sheet. These include:

  • KN5115P.
  • KN7028P.
  • KN6018P.
  • CAB551-0.2.
  • 1/2 NC.

In addition, the document lists solvents such as xylene, butyl acetate, cyclohexanone, isobutanol and n-butanol.

This range gives coating makers several options during formulation work. However, compatibility can depend on the blend ratio. For this reason, check each blend at the amounts you plan to use.

For Solid-Color and Metallic Plastic Paints

KENXON recommends KN5018P for PC plastic solid-color paints and aluminum-pigmented paints.

For example, the metallic paint reference formula combines the resin with aluminum pigment, CAB solution, additives and a curing agent. In the supplier’s test, this coating showed excellent aluminum-flake orientation. It also passed the leveling check.

These results help formulators assess the resin for metallic finishes. However, the final appearance depends on the full formula and application process.

KN5018P Resin Properties

The following table lists the properties of the supplied resin.

PropertySpecification
CompositionAcrylic copolymer
AppearanceClear and transparent
Viscosity at 25°C2–4 Pa·s
Acid value2–5 mg KOH/g
SolventXylene / butyl acetate
Color≤1, Fe-Co scale
Solids content50 ± 2%

These values describe the resin raw material. By contrast, the coating tests below describe a complete reference paint system.

Reference Coating Test Results

The supplier tested the reference coating on ABS. The data sheet states a baking condition of 70°C for 60 minutes. For resistance tests, it also specifies a further 24-hour conditioning period.

TestReported Result
Surface drying, cotton-ball method15 minutes
Pencil hardnessH
Gloss at 60°70
Cross-cut adhesion100%, as stated in the data sheet
Aluminum-flake orientationExcellent
LevelingPassed
Ethanol rubbing resistance23 cycles at a 500 g load; 13 μm film thickness
Acid resistancePassed: 10% H₂SO₄ for 48 hours
Alkali resistancePassed: 5% NaOH for 24 hours

For the acid and alkali tests, the acceptance criteria required no blistering, peeling or color change.

These results provide useful reference data. However, they do not describe every paint that contains KN5018P. Therefore, run trials with your own formula, substrate and process.

Packaging and Storage

KENXON supplies KN5018P in 190 kg drums. The product data sheet states a shelf life of 24 months from the production date.

Keep each container tightly closed. Also, store the resin in a cool, ventilated place away from heat and ignition sources.

Because KN5018P contains solvents, follow the safety data sheet when handling it.

Discuss Your Formula with KENXON

KN5018P offers a practical option for teams seeking a hydroxyl acrylic resin for plastic coatings. Its main features include broad compatibility, good ABS and PC adhesion, fast drying and good recoatability.

To start a product review, share your plastic type, target finish and application conditions. With these details, KENXON can discuss the resin and its reference formula with your team.
